Biomimetic - better than natural?

Biomimetic: To imitate the natural processes found in the skin. When you take a biomimetic approach everything seems to fall into place easily.

  • Hydration of the skin is improved considerably and lasts much longer
  • Potential for irritation and inflammation is reduced significantly
  • The cream needs less preservation
  • Active ingredients easier, quicker and in greater quantities

Here is a more detailed explanation:
In the 1980’s we first saw the development of so-called natural skin care. Despite their original popularity few of them are still around today. Barely any are used by serious skin professionals or cosmetic doctors. The terms ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ normally indicate the exclusive use of plant-based ingredients. This philosophy and the idea behind it may appeal yet there are some weaknesses.

  • Nearly all these creams are water-based. As explained in the section on Hydratain Emulsion System they are a type of ‘vanishing cream’ and generally don’t offer long lasting hydration.
  • Their concept and their marketing does not allow for synthetic (man made) ingredients. Consequently they usually lack vital components such as urea, Q10 and similar beneficial ingredients which are synthetically derived.

Dr. Spiller Hydratain® emulsions have gone a giant step further. They are biomimetic. What does that mean?

Biomimetics is the study of nature and the transfer of knowledge from biology to technical applications. Nature always works for MAXIMUM achievement with MINIMUM effort. Nature’s building principles and mechanisms are brilliant.

How does this apply to cosmetics?

Generally speaking, the cosmetic chemist has two options when producing a skin care cream: he either produces a water-based cream (water on the outside with oil suspended inside) or an oil-based cream (oil on the outside with water suspended on the inside) – see table. Our skin’s natural acid mantle is clearly the MOST NATURAL skin care cream (in fact, it is the ONLY natural skin care cream). It consists of sebum (oil) and perspiration (water). Sebum forms the outside phase, fully enclosing perspiration – here is an illustration.

ImageOil-based creams produced with traditional technology have an oil content of nearly 50%. No matter what oils are used, such a cream will be heavy, difficult to apply and will feel greasy on the skin. That is the reason why nearly all commercial skin care products are water based. But Dr. Spiller's unique emulsions solve this:

Dr. Spiller’s Hydratain™ technology allows him to produce oil-based creams with an oil content as low as 19%. They are very light, easy to apply and feel very comfortable on the skin. Dr. Spiller Hydratain™ emulsions copy the structure and biology of the skin’s acid mantle.

If we copy nature ‘biomimetically’ everything falls into place.
